I have heard some people call film the "master medium."
Though qualifying any of the arts in that way seems akin to arguing the health benefits of Apple Jacks vs. Honey Nut Cheerios, I am inclined to point out that the medium of film combines music and visual storytelling more effectively than most ancient religious ceremonies.
I add a paraphrasing of a Kubric quote: If someone writes a novel, and someone makes a symphony, then someone has to make a movie [to synergistically combine the two previous works of genius].
What he's implying is that the music has to be as good as the story, and when I think of the Godfather, Twin Peaks and Star Wars, I also think of music that seems to follow the story like a soul mate.
That being said, I am excited to participate in a panel at Canadian Music Week (just a few hours before the Canadian premiere of the film) called Screen Gems: Composing for Film, TV and Advertising
"If anything, a downsizing economy seems to feed our need for escapism (and the nesting urge is pure gold for the home entertainment biz)" moderated by Lenny Kalikow, along with composers Jim Dooley and Blake Neely.
If you're in Toronto, come on down to Fairmont Royal York, CMW’s host hotel, Saturday, March 14th at 12:30 PM.
